Something Pertaining to God by Eli Leon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Subtitle: The Patchwork Art of Rosie Lee Tompkins. Exhibition catalog published May 2007 by the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. 29 pages.
Rosie Lee Tompkins (real name Effie Mae Howard) (1936-2006) was an African-American quilt maker from California (born in Arkansas). Her work (as illustrated in this catalog) is improvisational and very spiritual. In addition to making quilts, Tompkins also created patchwork, embroidered and appliqued wall hangings, furniture covers, and pillows. The text by Eli Leon, the curator of the exhibit and a friend of Tompkins, offers a wonderful insight and background into her life and work.
An absolutely glorious and inspirational book - I only wish I had seen the exhibition.
